MANILA, Philippines — The General Commission on United Methodist Men (UMM) and the National United Methodist Men of the Philippines (NUMMP) held their first-ever Connectional Conference on July 22-23 at Central United Methodist Church in Ermita, Manila.
The two-day event culminated with the signing of a Connectional Covenant of Commitment, formally strengthening the partnership between UMM and NUMMP, along with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to participants.
The event brought together bishops, agency leaders and delegates from across the Philippines' three episcopal areas under the theme "Empowering Men for Christ: Strengthening Discipleship, Stewardship, and Mission in the United Methodist Church."
The conference opened with worship and an inspirational message from Bishop Ruby-Nell Estrella of the Manila Episcopal Area. Presentations followed from Bishop L. Jonathan Holston, Alabama-West Florida Conference; Bishop Rodel Acdal, Baguio Episcopal Area; Bishop Ismael Painit, Davao Episcopal Area; Retired Bishop Rudy Juan, Davao Episcopal; Retired Bishop Cerie Francisco, Manila Area; the Rev. Dr. Rick Vance, general secretary of the General Commission on United Methodist Men; and David Santos, NUMMP president.
Delegates took part in sessions on the global ministry and vision of UMM. They discussed strengths and opportunities, alongside small-group discussions on the challenges facing United Methodist men today.
Vance served as a resource person for the conference: "I leave the Philippines with a grateful heart and a deeper appreciation for the strength and vitality of our worldwide connection. This visit was not about bringing ministry to one another, but about sharing in God's work together, learning from each other, and strengthening relationships that will continue long after this trip has ended. I have been inspired by the faith, generosity, and leadership of our global brotherhood throughout the Philippines. Together, we are discovering new opportunities to encourage men to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ and to serve their churches and communities. I am grateful for these friendships and look forward to all that God has in store as we continue walking together in ministry."
