Higher Education and Ministry
The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) seeks to bring people together to discern, learn, and lead for the church and the academy. As a worldwide agency, we work with key partners, churches, and institutions to offer connectional and collaborative programs to support higher education and ministry around the world.
What It Means to Be Related to a United Methodist Church with Education in Its DNA, a refreshed primer that reaffirms the church’s longstanding commitment to church related education and provides United Methodist related institutions with guidance for understanding their identity and advancing mission driven, high quality, accessible learning.
The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) has launched a new Course of Study (COS) Catalog, a unified resource that — for the first time — brings together COS course offerings from the nine regional schools in one easily accessible location.
Since 1972, the Black College Fund (BCF), administered by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, has supported 11 United Methodist–related HBCUs in the United States by strengthening academic programs, maintaining infrastructure, and keeping tuition affordable.
The educational institutions affiliated with The United Methodist Church are among the finest in the world and contribute to the greater good of humanity. The vast expanse of Methodism’s educational footprint cannot be overstated, the 109 United Methodist-affiliated educational institutions have made an immeasurable impact in the world.
GBHEM is committed to supporting effective Christian leadership and discernment through spiritual formation.
GBHEM is responsible for The Methodist Global Education Fund for Leadership Development (MGEFLD) — which includes the international Grants and Scholarships Program (GRASP) — and the Central Conference Theological Education Fund (CCTEF). The agency also has ten regional hubs for Leadership, Education, and Development (LEAD Hubs) on five continents.
