Ever since the abolition of slavery in the United States, Methodists have supported the education and advancement of African Americans. In this spirit, the Methodists founded eleven historically black colleges which have been providing quality education for African American students for over a century. Since then numerous students have come out of these colleges as leaders in their churches and communities. Today, The United Methodist Church continues to support these great institutions through the Black College Fund apportionment.
