Action Alert: Demand that Congress Make Healthcare Accessible for All

After a record long government shutdown, the U.S. Congress has managed to reopen the government through a short-term funding measure. While this package includes full funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), it does not include an extension of subsidies for Affordable Care Act health insurance premiums. If Congress does not act, these enhanced subsidies will expire by December 31, 2025.

As United Methodists, we continue to affirm that “health care is a basic human right” and understand that accessible, quality food systems contribute to healthy outcomes (United Methodist Social Principles, The Political Community, Basic Rights and Freedoms, A. Health Care). Contact your congressional leaders now to urge that this vision of health equity is upheld.

Enhancements to premium tax credits are helping more than 20 million people afford health coverage in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces. Many enrollees have already experienced higher rates to their 2026 premiums. If Congress fails to extend these enhancements by the end of the year, over 4 million people will be uninsured.

Act now to let your congressional leaders know that the Affordable Care Act enhanced subsidies must be extended to keep all Americans healthy.
