Educator and mother Tamara Fyke shares insights from her relationship with her son on how to teach children to be competent and responsible people. Sometimes this means guiding them through difficult or stressful situations when the child keeps saying, "I can't."

Fyke argues that social skills and problem-solving are some of the most important skills children need to learn to succeed in this high-tech and fast-moving world.

The best ways to help students develop is to create a positive learning environment they want to be a part of, take time to have thoughtful conversations with them and give them real-life challenges to tackle instead of just tests and traditional homework.
