‘Rooted Methodism’ launches today to explore faith and culture
New GCAH course traces Methodist engagement from Wesley to the present

Madison, N.J. – “Rooted Methodism: Deeper Dives into our History,” the follow up to the popular “Radicle Methodism” video curriculum, launches today as a seven-part  exploration of how Methodism has intersected -- and continues to intersect --  with American culture. Produced by the General Commission on Archives and History, the course explores topics, including race, medicine, education, women, voting, youth and sexuality.

“Throughout our denomination’s history, especially in America, the Methodist movement has both shaped and been shaped by the nation’s moral and ethical landscape,” said Dr. Ashley Boggan, GCAH’s general secretary. “‘Rooted Methodism’ invites us to dig deep into our roots of our story, uncovering pivotal moments where faith and culture met, tracing our story from John Wesley’s earliest ministry to the present day.”

The resource materials include videos, discussion guides, suggested readings. The first module, “Race, Culture and American Methodism,” is available to preview at the link. To access the modules and other materials, go to UM History Hub.

“Radicle Methodism,” released in January 2024 and focused on theological foundations, has been viewed by thousands of United Methodists in settings ranging from confirmation  and new members classes to Sunday school and small group gatherings. Likewise, “Rooted Methodism” is intended for those seeking a deeper understanding of The United Methodist Church’s engagement with the world.

“Our hope with ‘Rooted Methodism,’” Boggan adds, “is that through authentic storytelling, we remember that God has continually equipped Methodists with tools and people to meet the challenges of their time and to more faithfully into the future.”

Video scripts and curriculum created by Dr. Ashley Boggan and the Rev. Dr. Rob Lee are based on research and original papers from Dr. Sarah Campbell and Madison Barben.
