United Methodist Men elects new general secretary
Richard Vance set to succeed Bishop James Swanson, Sr., as agency’s chief executive
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Richard Vance, current Director of operations of United Methodist Men, has been elected to serve as the general secretary for the agency. Vance assumes the new role on Oct. 1, 2025.
Vance was elected during a special called meeting of the Board of Directors prior to Men’s & Scouting National Gathering held Jul. 31 – Aug. 3, at St. Simon’s Island, Ga. Vance will step into the role that will be vacated by Bishop James Swanson, Sr., who is set to retire on Dec. 31, 2025, after serving as the interim general secretary since 2023. Before retiring, Bishop Swanson will move into a coaching role as Vance transitions into the new position.
“The vision of United Methodist Men—to equip men to grow in Christ, so others may know Christ—is not just a statement on a wall. It is a calling that resonates deeply with my own purpose and passion for ministry,” Vance said. “In my ministry, I’ve witnessed how men, when supported and spiritually equipped, can become catalysts for healing in families, strength in congregations, and hope in communities. UMM provides a pathway for that transformation—through relationships, resources, and opportunities for service that call men to something deeper.”
Vance, who has been with United Methodist Men since 2016, says he will use his history with the agency and his passion for Men’s and Scouting Ministries to deepen discipleship, expand relational networks, elevate missional service, invest in emerging leaders, and to strengthen organizational impact.
“This mission is lived out by developing resources, fostering relationships, and building networks that support men’s spiritual growth and leadership in every context—from local congregations to international communities.” Vance said. “This work is not about keeping a program alive—it’s about keeping a mission moving. It’s about calling men into the life-changing adventure of following Jesus and serving the world in His name.”
“We are excited to elevate Rick to this new role,” said Swanson. “His work and leadership with United Methodist Men has already made an impact and we are excited to see where he will take us in the future as the general secretary.”
Vance is an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church and has more than 30 years of experience in ministry.
