Instagram basics: How to set up an account for your local church

Instagram has more than 600 million active users and more than 400 million of those interact with the app every day! That makes Instagram one of the fastest-growing apps! Do you know what that means for local church leaders? Instagram is a great place for your congregation to spread the message of God’s love and connect with members and visitors alike!

Grab your mobile device and use these step-by-step instructions for setting up your account.

Step 1: Download App
First, you need to download the app. It’s free and you can get it from the iOS App Store, Google Play or Windows Phone Store, depending on your mobile device.

It’s important to note that while you can browse Instagram from your desktop, you can only upload photos and videos to your account through the mobile app.

Step 2: Open app and sign up for an account
Ok, now that the app is installed, tap the Instagram icon to open it. Tap Sign Up. You’re presented with two options.

For this, we’re going to sign up using email. Now, you have to create a username. It’s a good idea to make sure that your church has the same username across different platforms, so that visitors can easily find and identify you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and any other social media networks you might using. You want to keep it consistent.

Step 3: Connect with Facebook friends or friends on Instagram
Next, you’ll be prompted to find Facebook friends to connect with on Instagram or you can just skip this step altogether right now.

Then, it will ask you the same thing about connecting with the contacts in your mobile device who are on Instagram. You can skip that step too.

Step 4: Set up your profile
Now, it’s time to write your short bio, add a link to your church’s website and upload your profile photo. Instagram’s profile photos are tiny. So, make sure you’re using an image that’s easily identified — maybe a picture of your church’s exterior.

And now you’re ready to start ‘gramming! But what to post? Stay tuned for ideas!
