MISSION MOMENT
Begin today's reflection by reading the Scripture passage using the link below 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 (CEB)
In 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10, Paul gives thanks for a community whose faith is not simply something they believe. Their faith is active. Their love leads them to serve, and their hope in Jesus Christ gives them strength to keep going. Paul sees how the gospel is being lived out in their lives, and their example is becoming known beyond their own community.
That is the heart of Laity Sunday.
Laity Sunday reminds us that the ministry of the Church belongs to all God’s people. Not just pastors. Not just church staff. All of us. Through prayer, service, leadership, generosity, witness, and compassion, laypeople live out their faith and help make disciples of Jesus Christ.
Think about someone in your congregation who quietly lives this out. Perhaps it is the person who visits someone who is sick, teaches children, welcomes a new family, delivers a meal, serves at a food pantry, leads a Bible study, or simply notices when someone needs encouragement. Their work may never make the news, but it can change a life.
Paul recognized something similar in the Thessalonians. Their faith had become an example to others because they were putting what they believed into action.
The United Methodist Church is built around this kind of shared ministry. We are a connectional church, which means congregations are connected so that we can work together rather than carrying the mission of Christ alone. Through our connectional giving system, we share resources to strengthen ministries and equip people for service across the Church.
That giving is more than money. At its heart, it is a covenant to walk together. Every gift tells a story, and every story can begin with the impact we make through our giving.
Laity Sunday invites us to see ourselves differently. We are not simply people who attend church. We are people called to live our faith—in our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and our churches.
Like the Thessalonians, our faith can become visible through what we do and how we love.

Title: Let Your Light Shine
Materials: A flashlight, a Bible and a small mirror
Good morning, friends! I’m so glad to see you today! I brought a few things with me. Can you tell me what they are? (Hold up the flashlight, Bible, and mirror.) That's right! A flashlight, a Bible, and a mirror.
What does a flashlight do? (Pause for answers.) Yes! It shines light.
What happens when it's dark and someone turns on a flashlight? Suddenly, everyone can see better.
Our Bible story today comes from a letter written by Paul to some Christians in a place called Thessalonica. Paul told them that people could see their faith because of the way they loved God and cared for others. Paul said that God's message was ringing out from them. That's another way of saying that people noticed how they followed Jesus.
Now let me ask you something. Do you have to be a pastor for people to see God's love in you? (Pause) No!
Can you be kind to a friend?
Can you help someone who is sad?
Can you share with a brother or sister?
Can you pray for someone?
Of course you can!
Every time you do those things, you are shining God's light. (Turn on the flashlight.) This flashlight reminds me of God's love. When we follow Jesus, we help shine that love into the world.
Now let's talk about church. Who helps at church?
Maybe your pastor does. Maybe your Sunday school teacher does. Maybe someone sings in the choir. Maybe someone greets people at the door. Maybe someone helps collect food for families who need it. All of those people are serving God.
Today we celebrate each one of them on a special day called Laity Sunday. That's a fancy name for celebrating all the people in the church who help share God's love.
Laity are people just like you, your parents, your grandparents, your teachers, and your church friends. They may not be pastors, but they still have important ways to serve God.
And here's something really special. In The United Methodist Church, churches help one another. One church helps. Another church helps. Another church helps. Together, we can do more than we can do alone.
It's a little like this mirror. (Reflect the flashlight beam with the mirror.) The light shines in one place, but the mirror helps it shine somewhere else.
When churches work together, God's love reaches more people. When we give, serve, pray, and help others, we are sharing the light of Christ.
Paul was happy because the people in Thessalonica were sharing God's love everywhere they went. And we can do the same thing.
Every time we show kindness, help someone, or tell others about Jesus, God's light shines a little brighter.
Prayer: Dear God, Thank You for loving us. Thank You for all the people who teach us, help us, and show us Your love. Help us shine Your light wherever we go. Show us ways to be kind, to serve others, and to share Your love each day. Thank You for our church family and for all the people who help Your love reach others. Amen.
OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, we thank You for the faithful witness of Your people. As Paul gave thanks for a church whose faith rang out through love and service, we offer these gifts in gratitude for all who share in Your mission. Bless our giving and use it to strengthen the ministry of laity throughout The United Methodist Church. Deepen our covenant to walk together in faith, and multiply the impact of our connectional giving so that more people may experience the love and hope of Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Gracious God, you choose ordinary people and weave them into a community that shines with your love. We thank you for the gift of belonging—for the call to live our faith in ways that ripple outward into the lives of others. Receive these gifts as signs of our gratitude and our willingness to be witnesses to your grace. Use what we offer to encourage the weary, welcome the searching, and strengthen your church as a living example of hope. May our shared life together always point to Christ, whose love calls and sends us. Amen.
